Canadian Farms for your Next RV Road Trip Pit Stop

clock 8 MINUTES READ

Canada is so diverse in its landscape, people and culture, so when road tripping through the country there is never a lack of things to see or do. One thing that is extremely important to the heritage of our country is farming and it continues to be a staple to many local cities and towns. From the eastern to western shores you will find a variety of farms that supply different produce or agriculture that are specific to each region.

Whether you are travelling with a group of friends, partner or entire family there is something for everyone to enjoy at these hidden gems across the country. Enjoy a variety of fruits and vegetables at a ‘U-Pick,’ taste delicacies and learn all about milking at a dairy farm or sweeten up your trip with a drizzle of maple syrup or honey ‘ your options are nearly endless.

Here are some great Canadian farms to visit when on your next RV camping trip.

British Columbia

BC is the province most well known for it’s fresh produce – specifically fruits and vegetables and has hundreds of great farming spots to check out. Book a Circle Farm Tour and take a self-guided journey through Fraser Valley’s vast countryside full of agricultural destinations. Visit berry farms and taste the fruit right off the vine or explore the workings of dairy farms, such as Birchwood Dairy, as well as local country markets, antique shops and boutiques. Circle Farm Tours will provide you with a map that takes you from 10-20 different venues that are all related to the area’s farming heritage, based around your interests and the amount of time that you have in the area.

Alberta

On the prairies there are many ranching sites and crops being harvested throughout the province. Visit the Bear and the Flower farm and check out the inner working of a Certified Organic Pig Farm that supplies a variety of local restaurants in Calgary and Edmonton.

If your interested in more of a history lesson take a drive down to the Bar U, a Parks Canada National Historic Site. Here you can tour through the original ranch buildings and have the opportunity to see what it is like to live like a true cowboy, including harvesting by horse. If your not up for walking through the entire ranch, take a horse-drawn wagon ride through the property visiting sites such as, the roundup camp and the cookhouse for some authentic cowboy grub.

Ontario

Take the family to a U-Pick and pick fresh fruits and vegetables for you trip. It is a great way to create notable memories and get delicious produce for your camp kitchen at the same time. Ontario is a big place, so be sure to research the different farms specific to the region you are in. Two that we suggest are Fruition Berry Farm or Parks Blueberry Farm.

Quebec

Cheesemaking has become unique to the province of Quebec, as they are home to many goat, sheep and cow farms. Choose between soft cheese, hard cheese and even good old smelly cheese. Depending on your preference and where your RVing trip has taken you, take a tour of cheese making facilities and visit multiple dairy farms throughout the province. Use this website to plan your route and learn about the art of cheese making from the very best.

Nova Scotia

There is nothing more Canadian like a batch of flapjacks and fresh maple syrup, so why not see where it comes from. Visit Nova Scotia’s award winning Sugar Moon Farm and tour the camp where the maple goodness is produced. After learning the story of the farm, visit the pancake bake house for a truly authentic Canadian brunch that you won’t find anywhere else. Also, depending on the time of year you go you can watch the process as it happens or visit the farm on a Chef night and experience some of the Maritime’s finest culinary artists ‘ all including maple syrup of course!

PEI

Known for it’s luscious red soil, PEI is a gold mine for produce farms ‘ especially potato farms. Travel through the dramatic green fields of the island and try out different flavours that the province has to offer. Take a tour through Webb’s Vegetable Farm or Crystal Green Farms, both family owned farms, and get lost in the acres of different types of produce that both farms supply.

Surely there are many more farms and agritourism destinations across Canada to see and visit and while we cannot list them all we hope our RVing friends will help point the way. If you know of a farm ripe for visiting (see what we did there), let us know on our Facebook Page, on Twitter or Instagram. Happy RVing and farm-hunting!
