Kick off this camping season with a boys’ weekend away

clock 8 MINUTES READ

It’s Camping Week May 23-28, 2017!

There’s nothing more manly than gathering the guys for a weekend getaway in the woods. Or to the lake, or the coast, or hey’even a friend’s backyard! Camping, fishing, swimming, surfing, cooking, and laughing should be the main priorities. Plus, with Canada’s sesquicentennial anniversary the highlight of the season, there’s even more reason to enjoy all that our country has to offer.

Campers across the country are kicking off their favourite season with Camping Week this May 23 through 28. All you have to do to join in is round up your best buds, channel your inner boy scout, and pitch a tent’or better yet, pile everyone into the fifth wheel.

Our number one suggestion when planning a boys’ weekend: plan ahead. Here’s a few things to think about before hitting the road.

Transportation

While sometimes the best adventures happen when you just wing it, you also don’t want to be stranded out in the woods without a proper ride back to reality. That being said, coordinate with the crew. Who will be arriving first and staying last’ Does your potential ride need to get back to the city Sunday night, while you want to stay an extra day with the others’ Don’t pile too many guys in one truck. You have to save room for all your gear!

Navigation

While it’s fun to claim the title of road trip DJ, someone has to navigate too. Especially if you choose a destination new to the whole gang.
Pro tip: Don’t rely on GPS for directions to the campsite. Save a screen shot, or print out a hard copy like the good old days. Depending on the final destination, WiFi might be hard to come by. You don’t want to be the ones lost without a signal.

Recreation

The best part about camping in Canada is the insane amount of variety our massive country offers. What will you do with your time away from reality’
What’s on the agenda’ Surfing, fishing, hiking, golfing, beach bum living’ You don’t want to be stuck in the wilderness without your Frisbee or fishing rod.
Will you be camping along Vancouver Island’s west coast’ You’ll need a surf board. In Alberta’s back country’ Bring plenty of sunscreen and bear spray. Ontario’s Muskoka’ Strap your canoe onto the car, and don’t forget your camera. For the thrill seekers among us, rent a ski boat and show off your slalom.

No matter where your destination in Canada, you can bet there will be a beautiful golf course nearby. If that’s your type of afternoon adventure, remind your friends to pack their clubs.

Other than the main events, pack a few games or a deck of cards to play back at the campsite. There’s no better way to wind down than with a little friendly competition, right’

Campfire Eats

If you’re staying in one of the guys’ RVs, that will make your packing life a little easier. It’s likely that their rig is already prepared with the necessities’like basic cooking utensils’so you will only have to coordinate boys’ weekend food and drinking water.

Chat with your friends to plan who brings how much of what. Maybe pack a couple outdoor cooking accessories to get the full camping experience. Pie irons and flame roasted burgers, anyone’

Prepare for all the Elements

Rain, wind, sun’snow’ Depending on where you call home in Canada, you should pack accordingly. May is known for its unexpected mood swings. You don’t want to be caught out on the golf course without an umbrella, or walking through the woods without layers.
This tip also applies to choosing the perfect campsite. Look for high ground with a good mix of sun and shade. If possible, check out your site as soon as you arrive before committing to it for the weekend.

Don’t Forget to Relax

You left the kids at home for a reason! Kick up your feet. Get out on the water. Throw in a line. Fry up some comfort food on the open fire.

The best way to kick off our favourite season is to enjoy yourself. It doesn’t matter where you camp or what you do, as long as it’s quality time with your pals away from the city lights.
