Prince Edward Island is the smallest of the Canadian provinces. The Island is only 224 km (139 miles) long and between 6 km and 64 km (four and 40 miles) wide. The Island is known for the vivid colours of its gently rolling landscape. White sandy beaches are predominant along the northern shores while red sandstone cliffs edge its southern exposure. Approximately 60 percent of the island’s population (138,000) is rural, with just two cities, Summerside and the provincial capital, Charlottetown.
