VISIT CAPE SPEAR NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE
The Baeumler’s began their journey through St. John’s at the captivating spectacle of Cape Spear. Cape Spear sits on the most easterly point in North America and happens to be the very first place the sun rises on the continent. Perched on a rugged cliff is the Cape Spear Lighthouse, the oldest surviving lighthouse in the province and an iconic symbol of Newfoundland. Make sure to spend some time exploring Cape Spear as it is filled with history dating back to the 19th century with a large presence in Newfoundland’s role in the Second World War and so much more.
VISIT SIGNAL HILL NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE
During the Baeumler’s exploration in St. John’s, they couldn’t miss Signal Hill National Historic Site, a symbol of military history and communications innovation that can be seen almost anywhere in St. John’s and as far away as Cape Spear. Signal Hill is home to where Guglielmo Marconi received the world’s first transatlantic wireless signal in 1901. You can choose to either drive to the top or walk up via the road and down the North Head Trail. The North Head Trail takes you along the rugged cliff edge, along the Narrows and into the Battery. It is a hike that is 1.7km and takes roughly 90 minutes to complete is highly recommend if you are in good shape and have good footwear on the views are unlike no other.
VISIT MALLARD COTTAGE IN QUIDI VIDI
Time for a Bauemler family meal. Nestled in the historic fishing village of Quidi Vidi, Mallard Cottage is a culinary treasure that perfectly captures the essence of Newfoundland under the skilled guidance of head chef and owner, Todd Perrin. This charming restaurant, housed in a beautifully restored heritage building, offers a unique dining experience where old-world charm meets modern Newfoundland cuisine. GO WHALE WATCHING
Next, it was time to rally the kids and head out into the Atlantic Ocean for a site they will not soon forget. With over 22 species of whales and the world’s largest humpbacks to be found just off the coast, Newfoundland is one of the best places in the world for whale watching. Watch the majestic mammals breach and play as you follow them along in the boat. The best way to see the whales up close is through the zodiac boat tours.
GET SCREECHED IN
Bryan and Sarah couldn’t possibly leave Newfoundland without becoming honorary Newfoundlanders! Screeching in has been a long-standing tradition in Newfoundland, and it is the official way to become an honorary Newfoundlander. The ceremony consists of kissing a cod on the lips, taking a shot of Screech, Newfoundland’s Rum, and saying ‘Long may your big jib draw!’ Once you have done all of this you are officially in and provided with a certificate and welcomed into the Royal Order of Screechers. There are many places you can go to get screeched in including Christian’s Pub (23 George Street).
VISIT GEORGE STREET
After being Screeched in, it was time for a stroll down George Street. Probably the most famous street in Newfoundland and well known across North America – George Street is located in the heart of the historic downtown St. John’s. This street is home to the most bars and pubs per square foot than any other street in North America. Here you will find local favourite such as fish and chips, cod tongue and so much more. Try some of the local breweries including Quidi Vidi Brewery.
MARINE PARK CAMPGROUND
Their journey culminates at the Marine Park Campground in the charming town of Pouch Cove, just a short drive north from St. John’s. This hidden gem offers an idyllic setting that’s well worth the trip. Perched on the coastline, Marine Park offers epic lookouts that tretch over the vast Atlantic Ocean, offering breathtaking panoramas that will leave you breathless. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast or simple seeking tranquility, Marine Park Campground in Pouch Cove promises a memorable stop on your Newfoundland adventure.
